Client Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Project The works comprised the alteration and refurbishment of the existing facilities to provide a Paediatric HDU department within its existing HDU Ward at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, The Woodlands, Bristol Road South, Northfield, Birmingham, accessed via Gate A off the Bristol Road.

The works were located within the Main Hospital central area (land locked on all sides) which provided a unique logistical challenge to our site team. The work was completed in a live, busy occupied hospital environment where it was critical that we retained all live services to the adjacent departments throughout the programme. The compound is some considerably distance from the area of the works which necessitated safe access through the hospital areas which was managed successfully. Our Traffic management and logistical plan allowed for safe and secure access for both AMG, hospital staff and visitors as the work areas were segregated from adjacent buildings and departments using extensive notices & signage, secure robust temporary hoardings and barriers. Phased working areas were segregated and secured using robust fireproof dustproof temporary partitions to enclose the work areas.

Sequencing of the propping and supporting of the new structure and ground floor alterations to the existing High Dependency Unit and Storage Areas works were carried out in three phases with works undertaken “out of hours”.

The alteration works involved new partitions, doorsets, plumbing installations, floors, suspended ceilings, finishings etc. New extensive M&E and HVAC installations. New internal HTML fittings provided. Externally, new paved areas, paths and parking areas were formed, SUDS drainage and incoming services enabling works.
